Situated on Vatican hill, St Peter’s Basilica is considered to be the centre of Christianity. After the first Basilica started to show signs of collapse, Pope Nicolas V ordered the restoration of the Church at the dawn of the 15th century.
The building truly takes your breath away. As you enter St Peter’s square you will see a central obelisk
with fountains either side, surrounded by rows of colonnades which are the work of Benini. On the top of the colonnades stand 140 statues of saints, crafted by numerous sculptors.
The dress code to enter the Basilica can be quite strict so make sure to dress sensibly if planning on going inside. Guided tours are a must to truly appreciate all the artwork inside the Church. Usually lasting around 1 hour in exchange for a donation to your guide.
