How to keep call cost low while abroad.
One way i’ve found to keep mobile phone
call charges as low as possible when abroad is to buy a country or global sim card. There are numerous websites out there that sell these sim cards but i found onecompare.com to be reliable, helpful and efficient.
As an example: I was in New York in July 2007, using my current network (o2) i would’ve been charged:
- £1.37 to call back to the UK per min
- £1.20 to receive a call from the UK per min
- £1.37 to call within the USA per min
- 0.25 to send a text message
However using a country specific sim card bought online the costs were reduced to:
- £0.32 to call back to the UK per min
- £0.18 to receive a call from the UK per min
- £0.18 to call within the USA per min
- 0.08 to send a text message
The savings are easily visible. The sim cards usually have a one-off price ticket of £25.00, and then credit can be added by calling up the customer service number and quoting how much you would like to add using a credit/debit card.
By cutting back on your mobile phone bills it allows you to spend money on other essential living costs such as food or a hostel room for the night. There are other ways to keep charges to a minimum, such as using payphones or the internet but travelling with a mobile phone is a must and this is just a handy tip to keep everything within your budget.
