Taking in to account the recent problems at Heathrow’s brand new Terminal 5, the question has to be asked; how prepared are we for a holiday nightmare such as lost baggage or flight cancellation.

Many would expect in the case of lost baggage to be able to purchase some essential items whilst abroad and then claim on your travel insurance policy after you return home. travel-luggage1.jpgHowever in many situations this isn’t the case, independant financial services research company Defaqto has reviewed a number of single trip travel insurance policies on the market to see what kind of cover is genuinely provided for a lost bag or flight cancellation.

Below are the findings:

14% of single trip policies do not provide any cover for delayed baggage.
40% of single trip policies only provide a maximum cover of £100 or less for delayed baggage.
40% of single trip policies only provide a maximum cover of £100 or less for compensation for flights being delayed.
74% of single trip policies provide £20 or less for the first 12 hours of being delayed at the airport.
82% of single trip policies provide £20 or less for the each subsequent 12 hours of being delayed at the airport.

Looking at this particular finding more closely, 40% of single trip policies only provide a maximum cover of £100 or less for delayed baggage. The maximum cover provided seems extremely low when considering such essential items as toiletteries, hygiene products and a change of clothes. All of which, would need to be purchased if your baggage was delayed by a considerable amount of time whilst on holiday.
